Books I am Going To Be Reading.....

Went to Chapter's this weekend and purchased two books.....

'The Runner's Guide Book' by Mark Remy and the editors of Runner's World.

*Describes more than 100 "rules" of running.

*Very entertaining and hilarious commentary about the sport of running.

*Also includes a useful runner's lingo glossary.

'Precious' by Sapphire

Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect. That is the device deployed in the first novel by poet and singer Sapphire. "Sometimes I wish I was not alive," Precious says. "But I don't know how to die. Ain' no plug to pull out. 'N no matter how bad I feel my heart don't stop beating and my eyes open in the morning." An intense story of adversity and the mechanisms to cope with it.

Reviews to follow.....

The fourth of the "Snappy Retorts to 5 Common Heckles" was my favorite... my laugh-out-loud moment of the book.

You would also like Haruki Murakami, "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running," and Alan Sillitoe, "The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner." I think "Lonliness" might still be out of print... I found a copy in a used bookstore in Galway after 2 years of looking, but maybe these days it would be easier to track down online...
