When we left Texas yesterday it was a beautiful 26 degrees (78.8F).

We had a lay over in Houston.

Even though we left 10 minutes early, the second flight took an extra hour due to high winds.

Love the extra leg room in the exit row.

This sign should say "Welcome to The North Pole!".

It was a frigid -40 degrees with windchill. Funny enough, -40 degrees Celsius is -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Blue Heron.

Remnants of some sort of fish.

The ~~shithawk~~ seagull is giving me the stink-eye because I am threatening to steal his lunch.

Another part of the Gulf Coast...... another kind of jellyfish. Did some research and this is called a Cannonball Jellyfish (Stomolophus meleagris).

The blue that you see in the jellyfish is the sky's reflection.

Gotta learn something new every day.

Yesterday I got in a 8 miler (slowly getting myself back in shape).

Who wouldn't love running in shorts, on a beach, in the middle of winter?!

How lucky am I?!

Let me tell ya............... the beach totally makes up for living in a parking lot.

Stephen F. Austin State Park

The Stephen F. Austin Park is a small park with some short distance trails. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in beauty and wildlife.

This park has full hook up sites....... very few state parks have full hookups (It's a good thing).

There were raccoons......

And at least a dozen white tailed deer that grazed and frolicked in the park daily.

Sometimes they were hard to spot.

Other times they were just feet away.

There were tons of Turkey Vultures, Hawks and Cardinals.

Over the last 6 weeks I've been a huge slacker when it comes to any sort of training....... running these stairs was tough.

The park has great looking trees.

Lots of evidence of the wild animals.

Every night we heard a pack of coyotes making their rounds.

Not sure if it is the time of year, but I've never seen so many animals at a park.

If you plan on camping at State Parks in Texas make sure to buy a State Park Pass. It costs about $70 but pays for itself quickly with free admission and 4 50% off camping vouchers.

Vegas Trip 2012!!!!

I've been to Vegas about 7 times now.

This is the first time that I was on the right side of the plane at the perfect time of day...... Got a great view of the Grand Canyon.

Got to see The Strip also.

Got a 1 bedroom suite at Planet Hollywood Westgate Towers.

The crushed ice from the fridge was perfect for margarritas.

The bedroom also had a huge jacuzzi.

Ensuite bathroom.......

With a washer/ dryer (yes, I washed my clothes...... because of living in the Airstream, I jumped at the chance to bring home clean clothes).

The Pièce de Résistance was the projection television. There were 5 televisions in the suite. Holey Moley.

Jo and Al were in the adjoining room so we all got to enjoy.

Please note: At first glance, the suite is totally spectacular. Upon further inspection, there were a lot of missing and broken items...... did not stand up to the 4.5 star rating. Without going into great detail, we did get moved up to the 53rd floor and got a $100 meal credit. NOT worth all the hassles we had.

Shopped out brains out.

Dinner at Tao. The chilean sea bass is always fantastic, but we were made to feel rushed.

Positive note: it is worth checking out.

******If you do go, tell your waiter that you want to take your time, and make sure to visit the restrooms (look under the mirrors).

If you love Italian food, a fun atmosphere, free wine, and lots of history, you should go.

I was so tired. Andrew had to poke me every few minutes until the the big ball in NY touched down in times square........... Lucky for me, New York is an hour behind Texas ;-p

Anyways, we (finally) made it to Steven Austin State Park yesterday. Sadie is very happy to lay down and enjoy the fresh air. The trip knocked her on her butt (me too!!!).

Today, I am flying to Vegas to see my sister and gal pal Al.......

....... Left Houston, Texas on one of the smallest planes I've ever been in.

I got to sit alone........ Bonus!!!!!!

I'm currently sitting at a restaurant, killing time before my next flight. Can't wait to sleep on the plane.

We've been traveling the last couple days..... Making the 24 hour trek to Humble, Texas.

This time around we have our baby girl Sadie. She doesn't like to travel long distances because it makes her tummy woozy........ we've got her doped up on prescription drugs.

Got a super busy month ahead......... Bachelorette party in Las Vegas, wedding in Canmore, Alberta, Andrews mom coming to visit and to watch Sadie while we travel to said wedding.

2012 is going to start off pretty darn good.

VIP Cinema

I can't sit still for long periods of time, so I rarely go to, or watch movies.

This past Tuesday I went to see Mission Impossible at the VIP Cinema.

This theatre is special because the chair backs recline, there are small tables, and wait staff.

You no longer have to wait in the concession stand queue. Someone comes up to take your order........ You can even order alcohol.

I managed to stay in my seat (I rocked back and forth and wiggled my legs).

It is a bit pricier, but well worth it.

Home for the holidays

We've been home a few days now. Had a chance to catch up with some friends and Andrew's family.

My nieces are at a fun age..........

They can sit long enough for Aunt Stacey to try out her braiding techniques (It's fun to talk about yourself in the third person!).

Can't remember the last time I braided hair other than my own.

Remember back in the day when you had to grab a hand-held mirror and fuss to see the back?

Gotta love camera phones.

The Holidays are also a time to indulge in drink, and food.

Apparently, I have been celebrating since we left on our trip :o

It's been a struggle to squeeze into my jeans (my fat jeans are now quite fitted). I am the heaviest I've been since I worked at Pizza Hut in high school. Yipes!

So I've purchased this......

P90X iPhone app.

I'll only get a couple weeks into the program while I'm at home (the trailer does not support any activity that requires more than a couple feet of space).

Gotta slow down on the indulging.

We visited the much acclaimed Slippery Noodle Inn. Thursday is half-off drink night.......... Good night to go :-D

We also spent an afternoon at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

This installation was ingenious.......

Could see it used in a home application.

Hmmmmmm..... Shower floor or surround perhaps?

A quick, but fun visit. Wish we had more time to explore.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Downtown Eureka Springs:

It's hard to explain, but the downtown area is on three levels. One road goes up, and one road goes down......... Many buildings simultaneously occupy both levels. Some stores are located in the middle of the building so you have to climb up or down stairs on the outside of the building (not at all 'wheelchair accessible').

A fantastic restaurant, called Oasis, is located on the very
un-PC level. It has the best home made salsa I've tasted in a very long time.

This restaurant is nothing to look at......... Had it not been highly recommended, I would have walked in........ and right back out.

The decor is eclectic to say the least. I think they had my grandmother's kitchen table, peeling linoleum floor, my mom's burnt orange macrame plant hanger....... Thrift shop decor.

I had a portobello/ spinach/ chèvre enchilada...... To die for.

The town leans towards the hippie end of the spectrum. This bar boasts that they sell liquid marijuana (got a bad reflection on the sign).

I don't know about you, but I know what marijuana smells like....... Can't imagine that it could possibly taste good. Blech :P

Blatant phallic suggestion...... Just sayin'.

The town would be such a hoot in warmer weather.

Gotta find yourself a way to visit this place.

I'd like you to meet Francis

I wanted to bring something a little more special than a photo, pillow or blanket when we left home for this journey.

So I brought "Francis".

Francis usually has a nice spot on the table in the Airstream, or on the kitchen counter (depends where the sun is shining).

Francis has to make the trip back home because I couldn't stand the thought of leaving it in the trailer while we were gone......... A month without sunlight or water would certainly be the end of Francis.

Even thought Andrew says I'm a nut job, I will continue to tote Francis around with me :-D

Beaver Lakefront Cabins

We've been here since Sunday.

We've chilled out and watched movies.......

..... at our own private cottage.

With fantastic views.

They have this floating dock........

You can use canoes, kayaks, boats, or lay out in the sun......... Errr.......... snow.

Have you ever heard of indoor fishing?

They supply the poles, hooks, and bait. I tossed a few worms into the water so I could watch the fish eat them.

Last night we had Chef Denise come out and cook us dinner. This service is offered through Beaver Lakefront Cabin's website. What an awesome experience.

The roads around here are much like the Dragon's Tail..... Another biker's dream.

The Eureka Springs area is well known for its cabin rentals, wedding chapels and it's historic downtown.

Gotta come and visit this place if you get the chance.

It can live more than a thousand years and grow over 100 feet tall.

Huntsville State Park

Here is one of the first thing we saw....... Yipes!

Had a great 13 miler on Monday.

Concentration is a must when running on the trails as there are a lot of roots.

Below is the area known for lots of alligators......... didn't get to close.

Biggest pain in the butt ever (our dining tent). It's pretty awesome but SOOOOOOOOO not worth the struggle. It's going home with us at Xmas.

Yesterday we caught up on laundry.

Then went to dinner @ the Homestead on 19th. I had the Chevre & Poblano Stuffed Chicken Breast with mushroom demi, lemon rice pilaf & fresh vegetables. Nom nom nom.

Today we are packing up all the items we brought for the trailer but have hardly used. You can not be a pack-rack in a trailer.

Cramming a couple posts together

I've decided to create my New Orleans post at a later date cause I'll never get caught up otherwise.

As I mentioned, we made it to Texas. Lots of very tall bridges.

We parked the trailer at the Sea Rim State Park in Jefferson County, Texas. Took a drive on the beach to get a feel for the place.

Wore shoes on my 9 miler because there were many shells and jelly fish.

It's very sad to see these beautiful animals washed ashore.

The beach was so awesome....... I felt like the only person on earth.

If it weren't for the extreme humidity and zillions of mosquitoes (was posted that there were 60 varieties), I could have stayed there forever.

I've never experienced such extreme humidity. It actually collected on the screens.

When the water started dripping down the walls and spraying onto the furniture we had to close the windows........ very uncomfortable sleeping at night.

A hurricane destroyed the park years ago. It's very sad that nothing seems to have been done to restore it.

The day we left, we took one last drive on the beach....... And we were off to Village Creek State Park in Lumberton, Texas.

I was having a great time on my 6.5 miler...........

....... Then I met this guy (or gal).

As I ran over it I thought "Hmmmmmmm, Weird looking stick, dead snake?"

Then it lunged, mouth open, hissing, and took a snap at me EEEEEEK.

I turned around and took another path =D

During this trip we were parked next to another Airstreaming couple.........

John and Susan invited us to share in their Thanksgiving dinner (super awesome people). They even had it a day early to accommodate us.

Got to taste some Texas home cooking. Mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top and corn bread dressing to name a couple dishes. Yummy stuff!!!!!

New Orleans was a blast. Yesterday we drove 5+ hours and made it to Texas.

We are boon-docking (no water/ electrical/ sewer hookups). Everything is run off battery and propane......... No tv, no coffee maker, no microwave, and no computers.

Right outside our door is The Gulf of Mexico.

I will have lots of time to get my photos organized from New Orleans...... I'll work on getting some posts uploaded.

Made it to New Orleans. As you can see we are set up in a big gated parking lot......

However, there are some amenities.

Since we are in a rough neighborhood my workouts and runs will be done here......

Not horrible.

Went to Crescent City Brewery and restaurant so Andrew could have some beer and eat some oysters. I had to have a Hurricane.

The next day we went to Pat O'Briens....... Where I had the real deal!!! This beverage can knock you on your ~~ass~~ rear end.

I love New Orleans!

McGuire's did not disappoint. The entire experience was terrific.

The first thing we noticed was that the entire restaurant was covered in one dollar bills. Our waitress told us that the last estimated value was 1.3 million dollars. Having worked with copious amounts of money in the past, I can visualize that amount of dollar bills strapped and stacked. Holy crap!!!!!!!!

The food portions are gigantic.

The waitress recommended that I order the corned beef and cabbage.......... even though I am not a meat fan I placed the order (I love cabbage). Look at the amount of food on the plate. There was half a head of cabbage under that meat. I tried a couple pieces of the meat dipped in the horseradish mustard sauce...... not sure about the meat but the sauce was to die for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McGuire's is very well know for it's steaks, extensive wine list, and for the fact that they brew 6 types of beer. Something for everyone to enjoy.

Make sure to check it out if you're in the neighbourhood (be prepared to wait in a long line if you show up after 4pm on a weekend).

Battleship, Submarine, and some flying 'Angels'.

Wednesday we headed out to Mobile, Alabama to see the Battleship USS Drum.

It was enormous.

The self guided tour was very interesting and fun.

Captain's office from back in the day.

Looking through the gun sight.......... Hmmmm, doesn't look too accurate.

Went through a submarine. Holy crap....... Tight quarters!!! I felt seasick even though the vessel was on land.

This submarine walkway reminds me of our Airstream....... Narrow and shiny.

This gentleman is a retired naval officer. He worked on a submarine like this one...... Lots of stories.

Friday we headed into Pensacola to see the Blue Angels....... Growing up, I always thought a "Blue Angel" was something quite different. hee hee

I could never jump out of a plane.

Or do this......... could you?

The stands were crowded so we just sat back and watched the show.

So amazing to watch.

The concentration and skill required for this.......... hard to fathom.

Really enjoyed the whole experience (Andrew shot the air show photographs).

Tomorrow we pack up and head off to New Orleans....... love that place. It's Andrew's birthday on Tuesday so we are celebrating both our birthdays at "Stella!". We ate here a few years ago and it was the best meal I have ever had in my life.

Gotta Run...... so I can eat everything I want on Tuesday.

Arrived in sunny Florida and did my first exploratory 12 miler.

Love that this cow is so fuzzy.

They appear to go on forever.

Very peaceful.

Have never seen a road this colour......... clay perhaps?????

Went for a tour of Fort Pickens located in the Gulf Islands National Seashore Park.

Lots of history. Did you know that Geronimo was held prisoner here for many years?

After the tour we explored the surrounding beaches.

The sand looked like snow.

Old footprints that have been windswept.

Came upon this and couldn't figure out what they were....... touched one....... dead jellyfish...... Eeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwww......... talk about 'Heebie Jeebies'. They were all over the shoreline. Needless to say, I didn't walk in the water.

Watched the sun set on the Gulf of Mexico.

Life is good.

Long winded today........

This past Wednesday, Andrew dropped me off 5 miles from a waterfall that we were going to photograph....... Needed to get a run in.

He was back about five minutes after dropping me off. Told me that there were wild dogs running on the road. I hopped in the truck and he dropped me off further up the road.

A short while later, I noticed a dog in the distance........ it was lunging at passing cars and chasing them down the road.

I texted Andrew, asking him to come back for me. I soon realize that the dog was headed toward me......... ~~oh shit!~~

There was a fenced off area to my right with a 'no trespassing' sign. Next thing I know I'm on the other side and staring at this dog who is staring right back at me.

Several minutes later he/she ran into the forest.

After Andrew arrived and rescued me for the second time, I gave up the run, and we went to the falls together.

At the trailhead, there were more dogs (these ones were friendly). Got one to sit still long enough to snap a pic.

Isn't he cute?

Water levels were way down. So, when we came to a part in the trail that we had to use a rope to climb straight down, we called it quits.

Decided on some car exploring............ quickly found ourselves entering a state park.

We saw a couple deer on the way........ Largest wild animals seen on the trip thus far.

We drove to a restaurant in the park, it had a great patio.

The sun was too low in the sky so we couldn't get a decent picture. Wish I could have shown it to you....... Was breathtaking.

Thursday we had appointments to get our hair cut. We were both long overdue!!!!!

I scheduled the appointment for Thursday because the forecast called for rain. Was right on the mark.

After a bit of research, I chose Studio 21 in Birmingham, AL (an hour away from our camp).

Let me tell ya; trusting a stylist, other than my own, is a scary thing.

Fortunately, we were both very satisfied with our cuts. Don't you just love the feel of your hair after getting a cut?

Found a specialty wine store next to the salon. Bought 3 different bottles.........

Cracked this one last night.

Before the tour.... very chilly in the shade...... thank goodness I brought a wrap.

The first formation we came across was named "Goliath".

There is a reflection pool in this photo........ can you see it?

With exception of the walk-way and lighting, this occurred naturally.

So cool.

Talladega, Alabama

Yesterday was our first full day in Alabama..... Andrew went into town while I went off on an exploratory run.

Great thing about rural parts....... Horses :D

..... And farm buildings (they photograph well).

Unfortunately, the mountains are further away.....

But you can still see them.

Cows are fun to watch.

I ran by a cotton farm...... This is the closest I've ever been to one. I picked a bit of cotton that was missed during the harvest. Hard to believe that t-shirts once grew on plants. Lol

Someone used this for shooting practice (imagine it was with a pellet or BB gun).

Today we are going to check out the Cathedral Caverns, AND, the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsborough.

Finding the Falls.

A 25 minute drive up a mountain, on a crude, dirt, single lane road...... then a 40 minute hike, brought us to Blue Hole Falls.

Further down the trail........ High Shoals Creek Falls.

We have been following the 'colours' on the trees as we head south.

Another 40 minutes down the road and we were at Anna Ruby Falls in Helen, Georgia.

Walked a 0.5 mile paved trail to the actual falls.

There were so many beautiful things to look at along the way. Nature is pretty cool.

This entire area was forested 90 years ago.

Imagine how large the trees could be if they'd been left alone?

Wonderful.

An area for reflection (a little cold on the bum though).

Moss was everywhere.

Yesterday we packed up the trailer and headed south to Talladega, Alabama.

Wonder what adventures are in store????????

This is the ariel view of the 11 mile stretch of road called "The Dragon"........ there are over 300 turns. It's like driving in a video game...... and believe me, a pick up doesn't handle all that well on it. Unfortunately, a sports car won't pull the Airstream.

Many motorcycles have tried to ride the Dragon......... The "Tree of Shame" showcases several unsuccessful attempts.

Dirty clothes and boiled peanuts

Yesterday was laundry day.

Had put it off........ a lot to do.

Have to get used to driving somewhere to do the laundry.

We've noticed several "Boiled Peanut" stands around town.

Had to stop and try some......... Errrrrrr....... ~~gross~~ Not my cup of tea.

It was late in the day when we drove to the Anna Ruby falls...... The gate was closed by the time we got there. Bummer.

But, there was beautiful scenery along the way.

Today we head out to Deal's Gap in North Carolina.

Gotta see the tree of shame.

Andrew and I both ended up doing our own things yesterday. He stayed around the trailer and read his new book....... a biography on Steve Jobs (can't wait to read it myself).

I used my day for exploring (and running).

Found a nice trail.

I was a little nervous because I didn't have any bear spray (was told that there were still some active black bear).

So I sang out loud and made as much noise as possible.

The trail was only about a mile long, so I headed off onto highway 288 (not as busy as most).

There wasn't a shoulder to run on. Had to jump off into ditch areas when cars came around. Sometimes I get really caught up in the scenery and I don't notice cars........... was startled a couple times.

Note to self: Must work on concentration skills.

I ended up covering a bit over 12 miles (felt good). Here in Northern Georgia, the roads seem to go uphill FOREVER. Too bad I am not training for anything....... cause I could be in awesome shape.

After dinner, I played around with my photographs. I am enjoying my new hobby.

The weather has improved.....

....... Not too hot.....

We went for a drive to a town called Helen .

It's a quaint, touristy sort of town.

Octoberfest was still in full swing.

We headed to a pizza place that was recommended to us (fortunately, it was away from the congested city center).

Yummy stuff.

Have not been getting any workouts in........ Feel like a dough ball.

Journey to Georgia

The first 5.5 hours brought us to Hungry Mother State Park in Virginia (arrived late and spent the night). Was a place I would definitely go back to and explore.

The next day we drove 4.5 hours.

In the rain.......

..... and fog.

We drove through the mountains. Pretty views huh?

We made it to The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiswassee........... lucked out with this site.

Went for a short run to explore.

Love horses.

The weather is supposed to clear up today and be mostly sunny for the rest of our stay here. Yippee.

After reading reviews on the Spy Museum, we opted to go to the American Art Museum on Monday.

A few pieces caught my eye.

The artist's creation of himself.

Very powerful.

Very realistic.

Monday we took a bus tour.

Ever since watching School House Rock as a child, I wanted to sit on the steps of Capitol Hill.

I wanted to stand in front of the reflecting pool and see the Washington Monument.

But it was under reconstruction. Boo :(

Couldn't get close to the White House. Took this pic from behind an iron fence.

Dorothy's ruby slippers were on display at the American History Museum.

As were the Muppets.

Julia Child's kitchen.

And George Washington.

I do not recommend that you go to this museum. 10% of the exhibits were closed, another 10% had items that had been removed, another 5% of the hands-on exhibits didn't function properly (if at all)............ I could go on and on.

This is the Ford Theatre where President Lincoln was shot.

We went to a few other places and drove by some monuments.

Our trailer parked at Cherry Hill park in Maryland.

Today we headed off to Georgia...... In the rain.

National Aquarium in Baltimore

I love aquariums.

Did you know that this octopus plays with children's toys?
Loved watching the sea anemone and other under-water plants move....... hard to believe they are plants when you see how "alive" they are.
The stingrays were in constant motion.
Nice vacation spot.
The lizards were easy to photo as they just sit there....... basking.
Love, love, love jellyfish.
Some look like spaceships.
They are so graceful.
Could watch them for hours.
I wish I had the aquarium all to myself.

The site we had in Pennsylvania was beautiful, but quite damp.

I have never seen so many varieties of mushrooms in one place.

Some didn't look real.

I could probably spend a whole post on them........

But I won't.

Andrew was feeling well enough to travel yesterday so we packed up and headed out.

A kind gentleman brought over a tractor in case we got stuck in the muddy field.

The people at Penn Wood were so amazing........ made us feel so comfortable.

I think we will be hard-pressed to find another campground like it.

Made it through the field unassisted....... And we were off!

The drive was very long.......

But, we had good weather (had rained almost non-stop for a couple of days).

We made it to our new campground in Maryland around 7pm.

Looking forward to exploring.

Went for a bike ride at Sandy Creek Trail on Sunday......

The trail is a converted railway line.

Was a beautiful day.

Monday...... I made thanksgiving dinner.

Love my teeny stove and oven. Sooooooo shiny.

Went for a run to do more exploring.....

Due to the angle of the roads and the insane amount of winding round and round....... Feels like running on a velodrome track.

Didn't get a good picture of the steeply banked corners.

Went to Clear Creek State Forest on Tuesday to go canoeing....... the company that will drive you and your canoe back to the park had closed for the season. Boo :(

So we headed off to the town of DuBois to canoe in Kyle Lake.

Had a great time..........

Andrew managed to wrench his back........ been out of commission since Wednesday morning.

We are staying at Penn Wood Park for a couple of extra days so that he can heal.

Then it's off to Cherry Hill RV Park in College Park, Maryland (closest park to Washington D.C.).

Went out for a couple runs..... So much to see.

Love this old abandoned church.

Not the actual route 66.........

I'm a big fan of architecture..... Especially different houses of worship.

Andrew rode his bike as I ran...... Came across this beautiful mill.

Took a drive through the Allegheny Forest.......... Loved the colours.

There were more than 45 Airstream trailers that came for the Rally.

There has been a huge fire every night for everyone to enjoy. To give you an idea of how huge: the guy stoking the fire is 6'7.

The Airstream Factory was fun to visit....... But camping in a parking lot isn't my idea of fun.

There were some awesome Airstream relics.......

They are on display outside the front of the office building.

Our trailer in the concrete jungle.

The ride to Pennsylvania on HWY 80 was incredible. Unfortunately, this pic doesn't do it any justice. Long winding, hilly roads with spectacular views.

We arrived at Penn Wood Airstream Park just before dinner last night.

This is by far the best camp site we've had to date.

Looking forward to exploring today...........

I got my first Pukie Award. I am not a triathlete..... but I was fortunate enough to receive the award for vomiting at Run Woodstock.

We have officially left for our North American journey!

We have a few days at a campground near my mother, then off to Jackson Center, Ohio to see how they made our Airstream!

Getting excited over a salad!

I have been eating like a pig since Run Woodstock. I'm talking a large bag of chips, chocolate bar, French fries....... And that would be my lunch.

Today, in lieu of a quart of Ben & Jerry's, I made a salad.

This salad totally rocks..... I started off with making a simple balsamic dressing. Then I boiled some baby potatoes (bet all you long distance athletes are salivating now) and hard boiled some eggs.

In a bowl I added pre-washed salad mix, tomatoes, cucumber, and potatoes. Tossed it with the dressing. Then added the egg and the piece de resistance...... 4 scoops of garlic infused goat cheese.

To die for!!!!!

What do you crave when you crave healthy?

Gotta chow down.

Maybe ice-cream for dessert?!

Yesterday was a drab, rainy day.

What better cure for the 'drearies' than a little bit of retail therapy..........

We looked at kayaks and canoes.

Even received an impromptu tour through the manufacturing area.

We decided on a canoe......... Not the pink one I wanted :(

Once that decision was made..... We got to accessorize.

A canoe is going to be a wonderful medium for exploration.

Gotta remember where my center of gravity is.

Rock Star Tattoo in Milwaukee

Here it is......... Yup, got me some ink.

We met Brock a few years back when we were in Milwaukee on a motorcycle trip. Long story on how that came to be.

In a nut shell....... Andrew was tattooed by him then.

Turned out great.

Ashley was tattooing a client and the client was using a 'Boobie" squeeze ball to help ease the pain. From my perspective it was hysterical so I asked to grab a pic.

Here is the finished product. The best thing about it is that it is covering a tattoo that I got over 10 years ago. It was a faded Celtic sun that was poorly executed. The swirl to the left of the koi is where it was. Look closely..............

It attaches to one I got a couple years ago (lower right).

This one hurt ~~so freaking much~~ a bunch. I was in the chair for 4.5 hours. It was a piece that should have been done over 2 sessions........ I don't get to Milwaukee very often so it had to be done all at once.

I am glad I got it done..... but it may be a while before I get another...... Maybe?!

70 miles..... Lots of memories

LAP 1

We started at 4pm....... I tried to really familiarize myself with the course because I knew the next loop would be in the dark. It was a great course. Not technical, few hills and a couple of mud puddles. I was pumped. It had started to rain by the time I got back to the start/finish.

Team UltraPrincess was ready with my nutrition, headlamp, battery packs, etc. I took this opportunity to put some mole skin on my heel as I was feeling a hot spot.

The memory that really stands out during this loop was the naked runners. That's right; naked runners. I knew that they were doing a "naked run" but I never expected that they would be running along the official course.

A group of people were heading towards me and I didn't think much of it as I really focus on the ground when I am running trails (You never know what sort of things are waiting for you to trip on)... As the runners approach I start seeing several penises flapping around in my peripheral vision. Uuuuuuuugh.... Akward! Several minutes later I came across another 'Au Natural' group (some were clothed). This time there were breasts bouncing along with the flapping members.

I had never seen naked runners before. It was called the "Run Woodstock" weekend............

LAP 2

Headed out in the rain (coming down harder). This time in darkness........ I somehow managed to take a wrong path and almost got myself lost. Back-tracked, found some people.... was off in the right direction. getting lost sucked. I ran into one guy who went 2 miles off course..... I didn't feel like such an idiot after that.

More and more puddles forming by the minute but I was still enjoying myself. There was one muddy hill a mile or so from the end of the lap that had now become a mucky, "better have your shoes on tight" swamp. Tried to navigate around them with no luck. So I ran through it..... Had so much fun. Felt like a little kid.

Matthew and Dr. Ana were waiting for me as I came in.... Was great to see them (they weren't able to be there for the start). Got me fueled with soup and set me up for the next lap.

This lap not only left me covered in mud, it also left me with at least 2 dozen mosquito bites.

LAP 3

For what ever reason, it seemed so much darker. I have poor night vision to begin with..... I found the loop quite difficult to navigate. It was raining very hard and the puddles were only avoidable if you tried to make your way through thorny bushes.

My feet were totally soaked..... the water squishing between my toes. My moleskin patch got wet and eventually started curling down, and rubbing against my wet, fragile skin.

I was hunched over messing with it, when a guy stopped to ask if I was alright.... Told him I was chafing pretty bad. He gave me his tube of Vaseline. I don't know who he was but I am Soooooo grateful. I ended up ripping the moleskin off my foot and slapping the Vaseline on. Made a world of difference. Thank you to that stranger :D

During this lap, a bat flew into my face scaring the ~~shit~~ poop out of me. Soon after, I was running across a bridge and a fish jumped out of the water right under me. I shrieked and jumped.......... Then started laughing at myself, what a wuss I am.

I had a great time trudging through the shoe-sucking mud and water. There was nothing I could do so I made the best of it. My feet were really starting to hurt but I ignored the pain because I was still in a really good frame of mind.

Once in transition I peeled off my shoes and socks. Dried my poor, gross, blistered, pruned piggies, and slathered on Vaseline and bodyglide. So nice to have fresh gaiters, socks, and shoes. I was off..........

Lap 4

My feet didn't stay dry for more than a few minutes. Puddles were unavoidable at this point. I basically slipped and slided my way through this lap. My feet were in excruciating pain. I was still determined to finish. It had been raining for so long, and was coming down so hard, it was ridiculous........ had to laugh at the situation. Could tell that a lot of runners were disheartened.

It was (finally) becoming lighter out and I could see so much better. Thought to myself.... Only 2 more laps..... The rain had stopped and the puddles weren't as deep, but my feet were still soaked.

In the back of my mind, my ever-decreasing pace was disconcerting.

Walked into the start/ finish. I Learned that 40% of the 100 mile runners had dropped. Team Ultraprincess gave me lots of encouragement. In order to finish, I had to run 18 minute miles for the last 32 miles. Sounds easy enough (what I told myself).

Lap 5

Navigating through and around puddles...... I knew I was going too slow. My feet were starting to scream at me. I put on my ipod in hopes that music would help me keep my mind off the pain.

I knew that I couldn't keep up the pace. I also knew that I would have been taken off the course upon completion of this lap........ But that idea sounded so much better than dropping on my own.

The tipping point was when I tripped and fell..... I made my decision just before I got to the aid station. Once there, a volunteer called the race director and gave him my number letting him know that I was dropping. Oddly enough, I felt a huge sense of relief.

Couldn't figure out how to notify Andrew (I had his phone and he mine) so I stopped and restarted my runkeeper program hoping that when he checked in he would figure it out. I text messaged, and emailed myself telling him that I was dropping and for him to meet me at the first aid station. He got the message and was on his way.

I couldn't sit at the aid station because I wouldn't have been able to stand back up. So I made my way to the road so that he could spot me.

All the pain I had been suppressing suddenly became acute. I started to get dizzy and felt the blood dropping out of my face. My legs had seized and I couldn't bend to lay down on the ground. I leaned up against a parked car (so sorry to the owner of the car). I knew that I was going to pass out soon so I started yelling "Help Me, Can someone help me?". A woman came to my rescue.... she got someone to get a chair and waited with me. I started dry heaving and finally threw up. Someone brought me water to rinse out my mouth, some cookies and M&M's to get my sugar levels up. Thanks so much to those people that helped me.

I had asked Andrew to come alone so that I could break down if needed (I am not really comfortable showing emotion). By the time he arrived, I was feeling a bit better but couldn't walk. He carried me to the truck and buckled me in. He told me how proud he was that I dropped. I cried, but was at peace with not finishing (FYI: I have never dropped before).

It was the right decision and I am glad I had the courage to make it.

1 hour after the race.

3 hours after race...... my feet have plumped back up.

4 hours after race.......... they haven't stopped plumping. Yipes.

Day after race...... My kankle has a kankle.

Today I am still swollen, but it's much improved :D

Gotta wait for my feet and legs to come back.

p.s. I did receive a medal for completing the 100k distance. It doesn't make me giddy but, I am glad I don't have to return my race shirt or write DNF on it (did have to throw out the 100 Mile bumper sticker).

Things don't always go as planned.

I ran 70.46 miles.

Even though I am disappointed that I didn't finish, I am proud that I had the courage to drop.

Today, I'm going to relax and take some time to reflect.

Gotta heal.

September 11, 2001 marked a day that will forever impact the world. It breaks my heart to realize that the pain is still so raw and fresh. I will be thinking about everyone that was affected by the attacks.

I usually get really excited before a race..... I had an hour this morning where I thought I was going to have a panic attack........ helped me ~~poop like crazy~~ empty my bowels. Thank goodness that feeling has passed (pun intended). :p

I am here at Hell Creek Ranch....... been here since Tuesday evening....... been raining since Wednesday.

On a more positive note..............

I am not generally a stat person. I didn't use my Garmin or track my pace during my training this time around. Race day is going to be a different story. I want all the stats I can get. I will have my Garmin, fitbit, iPhone and the HUGE strappy thing will case a video camera that I will wear to film the course....... Perks of being married to a Gadget Guru.

I have a million things to do..............

A few years ago I started a blog..... I was preparing for my first ultramarathon. I created this blog, originally called 'Journey to an Ultramarathon'.

In the early days of this journal I became friends with:

1) Gailanne

Gailanne has been a great motivator and supporter. She has been by my side through good and not-so-good times. She is such a wonderful person and I am lucky to have her in my life.

2) Derek

We were both 'ultra newbies' and experienced a lot of the same things. He has great courage and has always moved forward with a positive attitude. I aspire to be like him.

3) Stuart

I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Stuart in person. He has been a wonderful source of inspiration and information.

I just wanted to thank them for their support and for being there since the beginning. I have learned so much from them and want to say.......

Good News

As you may or may not know........ I have been having issues with breathing and having asthma attacks during long runs.

Note: I suffered with asthmatic bronchitis throughout my childhood so I am aware of the difference of being out of breath and having an attack.

Went for testing yesterday and my Doc said that I had the lungs of an olympic athlete. Phew!!!

Said that the attacks could be attributed to the combination of extreme heat and humidity. Prescribed me an inhaler in case I have any more issues.

Have you had breathing issues due to the heat?

While out running errands today I saw a group of people on bicycles. They stopped in the middle of the intersection, picked up their bikes, and started chanting. Something to the effect of not driving cars downtown.

"Sadie Says"....... what I did this summer.

In case you don't remember, I am Sadie.
Andrew and Stacey are my people.

At the beginning of the summer I went to visit Gramma. I like it at Gramma's cause I get to sleep on the furniture.

I went fishing at Gramma Janets (well, that was before the summer but, it was really fun).

I am still getting used to this elevator business.

I went to see a show. Those guys were very talented. They trained their people really good.

I went to the spa and got a wash, cut, and blow dry. I think I looked good.

I chilled in the sun. Being a dog is hard work.

I played at the beach.

I went camping in this. It's not very big so my people were always in the way.

I played at the park.

Here I am at a pub. I have to sit outside the patio area. Mum brings a mat for me to lay on. The nice people who work there bring me water and pet me.

I am filling in for Mum because she's like a crazy person right now..... she tells me she's keeping busy so she doesn't think about her big race.

That's all I got...... I need a nap.

I've never liked the taste of sports drinks. They are always too salty, or too strong flavored. I've always been a gel gal.

A couple weeks ago Andrew picked me up a G2 Gatorade.

I was very skeptical.......... After trying it, I was hooked. Went out and bought myself a case.

I'm not going to change my nutritional plan with my race coming up so soon........ been drinking it throughout the day and after workouts.

20 calories a serving (just over two in a bottle) makes it even better.

Do you like the taste of sports drinks? What do you drink?

This past Saturday was overcast and humid. I was about 9 miles into my 20 miler and saw a dark cloud coming my way. I hoped it would rain to cool me off.

Got my wish.

Was about 1.5 miles from home....... didn't want it to rain at that point......... Soaked to the bone by the time I got to the front door.

Ran a 26 miler on Wednesday at Fanshawe Conservation Area. Shoulder and back still sore but manageable..... left knee hurting (possibly from fall?).

The weather was fantastic. There was almost no humidity and a nice breeze.

Everything felt so fresh.

I didn't mind navigating through the roots (as much).

I stopped to appreciate the views.

I witnessed dirt being tossed from the base of this tree....... the culprit is peeking out at me (you may have to zoom in to see better).

I really had to be careful not to squash the snails......... there were a lot.

Review of Fanshawe Conservation Area Camp Ground:

- Lots of wildlife ie) groundhogs, snakes, moles, caterpillars, chipmunks, spiders, snails, and butterflies.
- Most sites were not very private.
- Fantastic Trails.
- Has a take out restaurant on site (good fries).
- Showers were gross. It was bad enough that I had to run through spider webs all morning...... I got to shower with the spiders in the afternoon.
- The camp is located below a jet flight path.... noisy.
- Very friendly, helpful staff.
- Smelly 'dumping station'.

Who knows, the showers may be spa-like compared to other camp grounds......... I'm still new at this.

What good or bad experiences have you had at camp grounds?

Saturday we left Rondeau Park and made out way to Fanshawe Park. Andrew backed the airstream into the site with little difficulty. We still need many accessories, but hoses, solar panels, levelling blocks, and safety items have taken priority. I'll post a pic tomorrow.... just took one and it hasn't loaded into iPhoto yet.

Sunday: Got up early and headed out for what was supposed to be a 30 miler (finished 28.75). Being the first person out on the Lake Trail, I had the honour of displacing hundreds of spider webs with my face. Some webs were so thick...... I swear they could have been made with fishing wire. I ended up grabbing a branch and thrashed it around wildly as I ran (funny sight I'm sure).

I was thrilled to come across a groundhog mecca. It was teeming with at least 30 FAT well fed grass munchers that were surprisingly quick on their feet.

I managed to get a snapshot of this guy before he dove into his hole.

The Lake Trail has much to offer...... single track, wide cushy paths, root and rock laden inclines and declines, wooden bridges, a stream crossing, great views and much more.

Monday's 26 miler had a small snafu. At mile 17, my heel hit a rock and I fell forward, landing on my shoulder. Fortunately, it was on a down hill...... I had enough time to flip so as not to face-plant. The next 9 miles were VERY slow and painful.

Feeling like I had been hit repeatedly with a bat, I took full advantage of Tuesday's scheduled rest day.

Andrew did an awesome job pulling/ towing the trailer to the park...... the parking and levelling took a fair bit of time....... thought we did great for our first time.

Went to the beach on Thursday......

Sadie got dirty......

Friday morning: went for a 10 mile run on the Marsh Trail.......

The trail was lined with beautiful flowers.........

There were hundreds of frogs on the path..... Ran cautiously so as not to squish any........ I could hear hundreds more moving around in the brush..... Soooooooooo creepy...... put headphones on to block the noise.

Could you have spotted the frogs?

Was tough because I don't wear my glasses when I run.

Review:

-Great park with great trails to run or walk on.
-Lot of wildlife.
-Lake Erie is awesome.
-Private feeling sites.
-Boating and parasailing lessons offered.
-Very clean, private showers..... I use the toilet in the trailer so I can not comment on the park toilets.

Only got a few hours sleep last night. The bed is as hard as a rock....... We will be putting on the memory-foam topper ASAP.

We are going to be spending the night in the dealer's lot. Tomorrow they will go over everything with us and answer any questions that we come up with (anywhere from 4-6 hours..... Yipes).

Life has been super busy......... But in a good way.

I've been keeping a HUGE secret for awhile.........

It's finally official: Andrew and I are both unemployed.

We will be using some of our retirement money to fund a journey that will take us across Canada and the United States.

Along this journey we will learn about ourselves and each other. We will explore new places and meet new people from all walks of life.

There is a concert or festival almost every weekend in the summer. All we have to do is walk a few blocks......

Coming back from my run Yesterday, I saw that they were setting up for the Ribfest. After seeing this particular booth I ~~Could have killed for a~~ was really craving a glass of lemonade......

There are some serious competitors for the "Best Ribs" competition.

It takes less than a day to set up the large ~~death traps~~ rides...... Don't think I'll go on any.

What festivals/ fairs/ concerts have you gone to recently?

Every year the Running room puts on a "20 Minute Challenge" event. You can choose to run or walk....... The goal is to have fun and raise awareness of the importance of physical activity.

Most of us walked because it was so fricken' HOT..... Those that ran, did so at a snail's pace.

Everyone that participated got a free hat. Score!

I totally love my Salomon recovery shoes. They are very comfortable and very unique looking. Get compliments every time I wear them.

A running store lead me to believe that the Salomon XA 20W back pack was to be used for running.......

I totally disagree.

It's carrying capacity too large and my hydration pack flopped all over the place when I used it for an 18 miler.... Had to readjust straps several times and still ended up with lots of chaffing. I will use it for hiking.

Love the new Cliff formula......... Hate that they put a nutritional information sticker over top the same nutritional information already on the package. WTF?

I have to remove the stickers because I get the heebie jeebies when my mouth touches the papery sticker. That's a bummer.

Do you ever question why a product is the way it is?

The Folk Fest is going on this weekend.

Tomorrow I'm getting up early for an 18 miler (gonna be HOT!). I'm pretty disappointed in myself..... my training seems to be sitting on the back burner. I've got 5 weeks to really get my butt in gear, or my 100 miler is going to be a complete flop.

When life gets in the way of your training..... How do you handle it?

We ate Indian Wednesday night......Mmmmmm good!

Yesterday Jo and I became official Drumfit instructors.

Fuzzy photo below of our class participating with 4-5 year olds. We had a lot of fun.

We had some Viet Thai food for dinner.

I didn't enjoy the tofu or this little nugget. After asking three staff members I found out that it was gluten.

I had always assumed that gluten was only used as a by-product to be added to foods.

I haven't had a chance to get many workouts in lately. I'm going to have to kick it in high gear after the girls have gone home. Al has to leave tonight as she's got to pack for France (going home to visit family).

What sort of unusual food items have you encountered lately?

Vertical Challenge Race report..... Coles Notes version.

I made it to the race and saw Gailanne. Soooooo awesome.

Was very hot and very humid by the end of the first loop (2 loop course). I was starting to overheat.

Got dizzy and felt nauseous..... Had decided to drop but after catching up with Gailanne I pressed on.

Went through several more dizzy/ nauseous spells......

Had what I figured to be an asthma attack (have experienced breathing difficulties on 2 long, hot runs this season... WTF?).

With about 5k to go I started having another 'attack' which lasted the rest of the race..... Couldn't catch my breath.

Kept moving towards Gailanne's reassuring voice. She kept me going when I wanted to ~~lay down and die~~ quit. She stuck by me the entire time and I am so appreciative. I hope that one day I can return the favor. Thank you Gailanne :-)

I crossed the finish line in 7 hours and 35 minutes.... barely making the 8 hour cut off!

The vertical challenge was just that... challenging. I covered 50 kilometers and 1750 meters of vertical ascent (5741.46 Feet).

'That which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger' (that seems to be an ongoing mantra this year).

Today is my little sister's 36th birthday!!!

This is a photo taken last July when we were up at the cottage (Jodie on the right).

Jodie is flying into London tomorrow at 6am in the morning with gal-pal Al (that's effin' early). Al will be with us until Saturday night and Jodie is staying through until the following Thursday..... Fun, fun, fun!!!

More exciting news......

1) I start kettle-bell classes at the gym tomorrow night.

2) Jodie and I will become certified Drum fit instructors this Friday......

Going to be a fantastic week.

Andrew drove us up to Creemore Friday (late afternoon) and we found our way to the B&B. After checking in, we went to the local pub.

Got to see some (partial) fireworks from the patio.

I didn't really plan for this trip/ race very well..... Fortunately, everything has a way of working itself out.

Race morning, our hosts made us a huge breakfast.... Just out of the oven croissants, home made preserves and marmalades, mixed fruit, pancakes, and fresh heated maple syrup......

Fortunately (for me), pancakes sit very well when eaten 40 minutes before a race.

Andrew really liked being able to track me with the RunKeeper app.... But my iphone battery died after 24 miles. Bummer :(

I'll post more about the race once I've downloaded the photos.

I will be participating in the Creemore Vertical Challenge 50km this Saturday (first time). There is an 8 hour time limit for the 50k...... I'm no expert, but that doesn't seem to shout out "Cakewalk"....... Gulp.

Gailanne is also running it this weekend. I haven't seen her in over a year. Can't wait to catch up.

I need ~~an intervention~~ some help........ I have to get my butt in gear and start getting healthy..... must ~~stop eating~~ cut back on greasy food and alcohol..... I have to lose at least 15 10lbs before September or I am going to be in a heap-load of trouble come raceday.

Have you ever raced when you weren't an ideal weight? What was the outcome? How do you stay healthy?

Started off the day with a trip to the Arch.

Rode in tiny little pods up to the top.

Had panic attack after trying to look out the window.....

It was very high up....

Had lunch at a great little Sandwich place that has live music on the weekends.

Had cocktails at the Beach House in Forest Park. This little guy ran back and forth the entire time.... He wanted to meet the ducks ;-)

Have wanted these Salomon recovery shoes for awhile now..... Happened upon them yesterday.

These particular shoes are men's..... As per the norm, the women's colour selections are boring. Will let you know if I like them.

United by Cancer (Un-race Report)

I thought that this event was going to be a training day..... It was almost anything but. It was more, it was better..... it was training for my soul.

I didn't get to run..... I realized that it wasn't appropriate.

I changed my mindset, tossed my game plan, and I enjoyed the event for what it was...... It was a time to celebrate people who have beat cancer, to remember those that we've lost and to connect to one another.

The first lap was dedicated to the survivors. Everyone wearing a yellow shirt was a survivor.... It was both, sad and joyous.

Our team name was named after our team captain Marie (a survivor herself).

My mother-in-law and I before the start (Andrew took the photo). They both stuck it out the entire event.

At 10pm the track was cleared and a bagpiper came round the track playing Amazing Grace. As the bagpiper made his way around, the luminaries that formed the track were lit. Each luminary represents a lost loved one.

Very overwhelming.

There was entertainment all night long.

Every hour on the hour, a lap was dedicated to something fun. There was a bubble lap, a Disney lap, a hillbilly lap, etc....... Prizes were awarded to the best costumed/ most innovative teams.

The sunrise was beautiful. It was a privilege to be there. I finished a better person than when I started.... I am grateful.

With exception of dedicated laps, potty, and fuel breaks, I was on the track the entire time. I overcame exhaustion, learned that speed walking on uneven grass was very difficult, and realized that chicken noodle soup is nectar of the gods.

By morning I had covered 51.4km (31.9 miles).

My legs were stiff and I was exhausted.

This event was not only invaluable for my training, but for my personal evolution.

I will be on a track for 12 hours tonight (7pm - 7am) to raise monies for Cancer Research.

Unfortunately, I am not trained enough to run the full 12 hours, so I will err on the side of caution. My game plan is to run a lap, then walk a lap....... and repeat until the either the 12 hours is up or until I collapse.

I have been saying that I need to wash my Nathan hydration pack for a couple weeks now. I've worn it on 2 long, hot, sweaty, dusty runs.............
It's so offensive, it could make your olfactory receptors threaten to strike.

Have you ever shamelessly put on an item that really should have been washed/ fumigated beforehand? (Someone please say yes).

Gotta clean up my act.

During yesterday's 26 miler I noticed some cows......... the last time I had seen a cow up close and personal was in the 8th grade. (I did a project on Milk and Yanet had taken me to SisterSue's farm).

As I stood, trying to get a pic of the heard, one determined cow came rushing toward me with a big blob of snot dangling from her nose/ mouth. Even though I was on the other side of the fence, panic started to set in.

Fortunately, I couldn't think of any incidents where a runner was involved in a bovine snot-attack............ Phew.

Today I got to do my run in Sarnia, Ontario (visiting with Andrew's family).

Went to the river......

Saturday I attended the PodCamp London conference..... Met a bunch of great people and had a good time. Will post more about it when I've got a chance to sit down for a bit.

This heat is killing me..... And its not even summer yet.

Saw this deer checking me out.... Yes, that brown spec in the middle of the field is a deer. Sue me...... The iPhone's zooming capabilities are substandard.

Seven miles later I ran out. Egats!

Took refuge in a supermarket after having gone three miles without water. Had a pee (if you could call it that), washed my hands and face, then purchased some H2O before sitting my arse down and filling up my pack.

My break was too long..... Everything seized up..... Looked (and felt) like I was running on razor blades for about a mile.

Noticed these......BBQ rib tasting chips. Huh?

What is the strangest chip flavor that you've seen or tasted?

As always, the Cirque show was terrific. I find that the traveling shows have a lot of the same stunts.......... They are still amazing.
